Packing Tips
• Start packing 7 to 9 weeks before your move date. Pack as much as you can into boxes this will make loading easier saving you money and time.
• Keep your valuables and essentials separately, so you can take these items with you.
• Purchase proper moving supplies. It is far cheaper to buy packing materials then to have to replace your belongings.
• The most commonly used packing materials are as follows: Bubble wrap, Packing Paper, Tissue paper, Towels or Moving blankets, Foam chips, Polyfoam wrap, Cardboard moving boxes, Packing tape, Fragile tape or labels, Utility knife, Packing tape dispenser and Black marker.
• Use file boxes or 1.5 cube boxes to pack heavier items like books, files, CDs, DVDs, spices from your kitchen, and canned food items. Also pack your fine china, glassware, small antiques, and other fragile and delicate items.
• The most common boxes used for moving are 2.0 cube and 3.1 cube medium boxes. Use these boxes to pack kitchen items like small appliances, pots, and pans, towels, clothes, toys and electronics.
• Use 4.0 cube boxes, 5.0 cube boxes and 6.0 cube boxes to pack a wide variety of goods, such as houseplants, large lampshades, clothes and shoes, sofa cushions, comforters, and quilts.
• Take all your hanging clothes from your closets, with hangers and all and hand them directly into wardrobe boxes. These boxes are GREAT, not only are they easy to load but will also prevent your clothing from being creased during the moving and transportation process.
• Keep the weight of your boxes reasonable, should not exceed 40 pounds per box.
Packing items into boxes:
• Choose the right size of box for items being packed
• Tape bottom of box secure ( tape the same way as the boxes that came with your electronics)
• Make bumpers, take two pieces of the newsprint and loosely crumple them up, then take another piece of paper and wrap up the two crumpled pieces until you get something that looks like a submarine.
• Pad the bottom of your box with bumpers.
• Place items, like dishes and picture frames, vertically and in the opposite direction of the bumpers. This will prevent items from slipping into the cracks between your bumpers and being broken.
• Wrap each plate individually in tissue paper and newsprint; next take 4 wrapped plates and wrap them together. Take the bundle and stand on its edge in box. Use padding between bundles. NEVER lay them flat
• Individually wrap each glass, pad the bottom of the box with bubble wrap or poly-foam, pack glass rim down and pack empty spaces in box with cushioning materials, like foam chips. For best results use fragile kit for your glassware.
• Do the same for Bowls as you did for the plates. You can place bowls on end or flat.
• Fine silver should be wrapped in cloth.
• Fill each box to capacity if needed use bumpers to fill empty spaces.
• Pack one lamp shade per box. Put fragile labels.
• Delicate Items need to be wrapped individually with bubble wrap.
• Mirrors, pictures, paintings and glass tops should be packed in mirror cartons or be crated. Put two strips of masking tape over the glass in an X shape, the tape will keep it from shattering and scratching the underlying picture. If the item isn't covered in glass, you should first cover the painting in unprinted newsprint then cover it with bubble wrap and put into mirror carton.
• Original manufacturers packaging is the best to pack computers, printers and other electronic items. But if these are not available try to get a approximate sized box for the item, pack in shock resistant insulation like foam chips or bubble wrap.
• Drain all gasoline and oil from any power tools, and disconnect all batteries. Hand tools should be wrapped and packed. Bundle all long handled tools if possible.
• Very important to empty all your belongings from your dressers and other furniture into boxes so to reduce weight and protect your furniture when being handled on moving day.
• Properly label your boxes by listing the contents of each box, what room each box should go in new location and place fragile labels on any box containing delicate items.
